With the need to fend for our families, it goes without saying that not many of us settle for jobs because we enjoy them. We often work because it's mandatory to bring food to the table. But since we spend half of our life at work, wouldn't it be great if we made money from what we love doing instead of anything that pays? Now, that would be a purpose-driven career.

In the sixth episode of Rearview Mirror Podcast Reflection, Susan and Damaris talk about careers. The one thing that stood out from the podcast is how crucial it is to align our purpose with what we do.

And so, how do you get started to not only work for a living but also do a job that makes your life worth living? We reflect on five steps that are crucial to finding a job that aligns with your purpose.

Self reflect on your purpose

Your purpose is the key to living a fulfilling life. When your work aligns with your purpose, you'll feel more contented and happier with tasks at work. Your contributions towards the growth of the organization will be more valuable. You'll equally be positioned to overcome challenges and have a good attitude, even in the toughest of days.

Self-reflection on what gives your life meaning will help you align your actions with your inner values. It's the stepping stone to a purpose-driven career.

Don't cringe at the thought of asking yourself the million-dollar question, "What is my purpose?" or "Why I'm I here?" Though a tough question, and you most likely won't have the answer from the get-go, it will give you an idea of where to start.

Once your purpose is clear, you can steer your career in a different direction.

  • You can remain in your current role at your current company but strive to change your attitude towards a more growth-oriented mindset.
  • You can opt for the same role in another company whose mission aligns with your values.
  • Another option is to seek another role that matches your goals, values, and strengths in your organization or another company.
  • You can choose to quit altogether and start your own business.

Hone in on what lights you up

Now that you know your purpose, can you pin down what kind of work lights you up? What areas of your expertise truly make you happy? Go through your resume to find out which roles made you feel fulfilled, challenged, or passionate and which ones were unfulfilling or boring.

This simple exercise will show you a pattern of what resonates with you. Highlight the roles that you felt completely delighted to work in. What are some activities that truly gave you meaning in this role? Which projects were you excited to be part of? What are some of the skills that were required to fulfill those tasks?

When you are fully aware of the roles that awaken your spirit, you can sharpen your top skills to fit the career you aspire to pursue. You'll also be able to shift your energy to organizations that align with your overarching purpose.

Network with people in your community

You can get inspiration and insights from people who thoroughly enjoy their jobs. You can also get guidance from people who are already in the role you aspire to reach. In addition, look out for the people who've made the same career choice as you.

The goal is to ask questions that will guide you on your new journey. You want to come from these interactions with new ideas and clues about how to build your career on your purpose. You'll also be able to streamline your strategies depending on what you've picked from your networking spree.

Most importantly, these people can be your mentors, which is an absolute delight when you are rediscovering the right career path for yourself. Who knows, they might think of you when an opportunity pops up.

Get used to discomfort

The whole journey of discovering your purpose and pursuing it no matter what is difficult. You'll be engulfed by self-doubt and fear.

The idea of becoming an active participant in your life is often unsettling. Making tough choices that might shift your life's trajectory is uncomfortable. But what is the alternative? Living your whole life dissatisfied. That's not an option.

In the sixth episode of Rearview Mirror Podcast Reflections, Susan Njoroge says, "If you get into something, give it your best shot. You can't just walk away without having made an effort at what you do."

You'll have to get used to discomfort and uncertainties. There's no easy way out.

Keep going

I'm certain that the world will be a better place if everyone did the jobs they truly loved. Organizations and businesses would thrive.

You can make a difference in your own life if you focus on a purpose-driven career. The ripple effect of a fulfilling career will be eminent in your life and those you interact with.

When you enjoy what you do staying the course won't be a problem. You'll enjoy the journey despite the ups and downs. You'll flower in a purpose-driven career.
