In the 21st Century, hypnosis isn’t an untold story. Definitely not an unseen thing, too. We’ve watched hypnotists do their thing in films; we’ve read about hypnosis in books, and even listened as hypnosis was discussed on various platforms and on national television. However, do we realize the concern would be, have all we have watched and read about hypnosis really taught us all that we need to know? Or is there more to it than what meets the eye?

Hypnosis is the induction of a state of consciousness where the subject has a higher responsive nature and openness to suggestion or direction.

The veracity, however, is that most of the stuff we watch about hypnosis are mere acts for theatrical purposes. We’ve seen men and women cluck like chicken or bark like dogs under hypnosis, and seasoned thieves use the technique to befuddle and steal from unsuspecting individuals or crowds.

However, that’s not all that there is to hypnosis. We are about to learn from this article that there is a major difference between stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Hypnosis carried out in the hands of a trained and certified therapist is a treasure trove that brings about deep healing, release, and liberation from trauma.

In the hands of a trained and certified therapist, hypnosis works to heal traumas and treat underlying issues that arise from our pasts, impeding our functioning due to carrying unresolved baggage causing mental imbalances that eat away at our well-being.

This article serves to explain the work of a renowned hypnotherapist. Why hypnotherapy, regression and talk therapy for overcoming unsolved issues and why they are highly effective. We get a front-seat view; an entry point into the work of Tazim Elkington — who confidently reveals, “All my clients are a success story.”

Meet Tazim Elkington, a hypnotherapist

Tazim Elkington is a certified hypnotherapist who offers unique methodologies that have empowered countless individuals and groups to live more fulfilling lives. Her practice combines hypnotherapy, regression and talk therapy to “go into the deepest part of the subconscious mind and effectively heal wounds” that impact mental, emotional, psychosomatic, and physical disorders.

A little back story- Tazim’s story

She goes by the sobriquet The Indian Black Butterfly. Like many colloquial names, hers, too, has a meaning. A profound one.

Indian, well, because she is Indian; Black, born on this beautiful continent, Africa; and Butterfly symbolizing freedom and transformation; key aspects she fully embodies and shares with others.

Her journey on this path of healing goes back to over 3 decades ago. Her childhood was bracketed in issues that later gnawed and clawed at her adult life. She narrates her story in her interview with Damaris Agweyu. In true come-back fashion, Tazim chose not to bend but to seek answers from within.

She engaged in a life-changing practice in Transcendental Meditation, later becoming a Transcendental Meditation Sidha (advanced practitioner) in the year 2006.

A decade has now passed since Tazim flew to Kenya after nine years working in Canada. Her ‘gift’ to help others transform their lives led her to intensive work, and she sculpted out her own unique methodologies that have proved to be highly effective and unique. These methodologies have opened the world to her sessions which are unconventional and ground-breaking.

Tazim recently bagged yet another prestigious accolade. She has been recognized by Disruptors Magazine as one of the top 30 Life Coaches to look out for in 2022.

Lesalon Kasaine had a conversation with her where she talked about her practice.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is an invaluable tool that goes into healing at the deepest levels of the subconscious mind.

An example would be: If a girl was raped, first of all, she can’t turn the clock back. Secondly, we don’t want to take her back to that experience, because it was excruciatingly painful. What we can do, is go back to the age she was violated, and heal the emotions around that experience, shift her state of pain to acceptance, and unplug the violator through hypnotherapy.

Why would you recommend hypnotherapy?

Both hypnotherapy and transpersonal regression therapy work at the deepest level of the subconscious mind. Talk therapy aids the client at the level of the present conscious mind in understanding the core issues and distortions.

The subconscious mind consists of ninety to ninety-two per cent of your mind. Your conscious mind; this mind that you are using now while talking to me, is only eight to ten per cent of your mind. And that’s the thing that most people don’t know. They walk around thinking that they are in charge of their lives at the conscious mind level.

Are you saying that our lives run on our subconscious mind?

Yes, and your subconscious mind is based on all of your past. This includes where you have lived, whatever you have seen, studied, the things you have been told, the things you have experienced, the religion you believe in, schools you have gone to, movies you have watched, and whatever friendships and relationships you have had. All of these are stored in your subconscious mind and they influence your life. You see, the realities of our lives today are the total sum of our past. The subconscious mind is your memory box!

What if you haven’t healed your past wounds?

And hypnosis accesses the subconscious?

Yes, it does. As a hypnotherapist, I put the client in a trance state where they can access their subconscious mind and their old memories. Old wounds can then be healed.

How long does the therapy process take?

First of all, I don’t do quick fixes and superficial therapy. Most people will come with symptoms like feeling very sad, anxious, upset, physical symptoms, relationship issues, etc. without knowing what the cause really is. They want their symptoms to be cured. They want to feel happy. But that’s not how it works. These symptoms are based on ‘core issues’ that go way back to the past.

Happiness has been sold since capitalism and consumerism came into existence. If you buy a bigger TV, or a bigger house, or a bigger car — you’ll be happier. This whole marketing and advertising notion that happiness is absolute is misleading. An emotion lasts between thirty to forty-five seconds. What keeps an emotion alive? It’s the memory as well as the misunderstanding of what emotions signify and how they can aid or mislead our lives.

The memory of an experience?

Exactly. Why is it that someone can lose a loved one, and within six months they have accepted or acknowledged that death is unforetold and not in our control whereas another person could be grieving for 20 years?

Because one accepted and dealt with the pain whereas the other did not?

It could be that. It could also be because this loss has triggered many other losses. Or that the second person wants to be a victim. They do not want to accept the loss. Therefore this whole thing of wanting to be happy is absolute nonsense because if an emotion only lasts for thirty to forty-five seconds, then why do we hang on to any ‘one’ emotion? A symptom is an indicator of far deeper issues. The initial two to three sessions are spent getting the client’s entire history. After I get their full story, I now look at where the core issues began and then we start the work.

The core issues from their past, which cause the symptom of sadness, and a person might think it’s just the sadness they need to cure?

Exactly. The underlying core issue comes from their past. And generally, it comes from experiences with parents, grandparents, teachers, siblings, and so on and so forth.

So, to answer the question of how long the therapy process takes: For clients in their twenties, I do not do fewer than 10 sessions. For those in their thirties, no less than 12 sessions, and no less than fifteen sessions for those in their forties and fifties. If you are 35 years old, it means that you have lived for 306,000 hours. And you want to heal your life within just six hours of therapy? That’s a quick fix, and I don’t do that.

And how long does a session take?

Each session is two and a half hours.

Tell me more about that combination.

Hypnotherapy and regression therapy uses reliving to get to forgotten, ignored and repressed experiences that are the root causes of the symptoms that a client is experiencing. Hypnotherapy and regression therapy do the same thing, but directly at the level of the subconscious mind. Talk therapy, on the other hand, talks to the conscious mind. I do intensive talk therapy and by the time the client goes home, they are exhausted. While they sleep, the mind processes the events of the day. Talk therapy helps the logical understanding and begins to change the programming of the mind at the subconscious level. This combination helps in ultimately changing their behaviour, perception and attitude as they heal.

A person who wants to come to you, what do they need to know?

They need to know that my effective methodologies require openness, engagement, and participation to heal. The process is transformational and liberating! There is no better time than NOW to do the inner work, disrupt your life and find your peace and joy!

Do you do online sessions?

I do online sessions for people abroad. The face-to-face sessions are definitely more effective.

What would you say to people who are afraid of hypnosis?

Well, the reason most people are afraid of hypnosis is that they think hypnosis is what they have watched on TV and in movies; I’m not a performer or an entertainer. I am certified in Integrated Clinical Hypnotherapy and Transpersonal Regression therapy.
